Karen Rosen has a personal and career history that combines a successful professional career with a lifelong passion for volunteering and helping people. Karen graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Kettering University. After spending a brief time with General Motors, in 1979, she was hired at Battelle Memorial Institute and became one of the early women engineers to join the research giant in Columbus. In her 33-year career with Battelle, Karen has participated in more than 200 research and development projects, working with teams that developed a wide range of medical products from diabetes care to early cancer detection.
She was a founding member of Battelle’s diversity council. She helped bring volunteering into the workplace by organizing a team of more than 100 employees that regularly volunteered time at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Karen also served as a mentor for countless young women who would join the company during the course of her career. She also helped to advance minority student engineering programs in Columbus and became a lifetime member of the National Society of Black Engineers as a result of her efforts.
After retiring from Battelle in 2012, Karen remains active using her technical and managerial skills as a senior advisor to numerous medical product development companies. Giving back to the community through her time and resources is also a high priority. Together with her husband, Rich, both are passionate about addressing education and hunger issues. The Rosens have started two companies, a consulting practice and a real estate management business, that are structured to give back by providing a portion of proceeds to the Rosen Family Fund. True to the fund’s motto, “engineers helping educators” The Rosen Family Fund provides support for scholarships and special community programs in science and math education, arts education, and social service support to high-need populations.
Karen and Rich have one son, Michael, who has attended classes at Columbus State Community College, and works in the family business.
